Description

Vitex agnus-castus 'Montrose Purple' is a large deciduous shrub or small tree when limbed up with aromatic, palmately compound leaves. From early summer to frost the Texas Lilac is covered with 8-12" long fragrant flower spikes. The flowers are a brilliant medium violet color and work very well for attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds into the garden. Need other perks to convince you to plant this in your garden? The Chaste Tree is also drought tolerant and deer resistant! Once this plant stop flowering it will produce seeds and this will prevent further bloom, extend that bloom by cutting off old blooms. For a full shrub look every year shear the plant to the ground every winter. Want a small tree? Just limb up as this plant grows and slowly shape it into a small tree. Vitex agnus-castus 'Montrose Purple' can reach 8-10' in height and can get a 8-10' spread at maturity. The Montrose Purple cultivar is known for it's bigger flowers ,which are 3 times larger than the species and deeper flower color.
