Setcreasea pallida 'Purple Heart' - Purple Heart

Description

Setcreasea pallida ‘Purple Heart’ is a native to Mexico that is related to Wandering Jew, it is also known by the name Tradescantia pallida ‘Purpurea’.  It has lance shaped leaves that sometimes get as big as 7 inches and is loved for it’s dark purple color.  In mid summer Purple Heart will have small pink flowers with bright yellow stamens at the tip of each section.  Purple Heart does well in shady spots and makes a good plant for growing under trees, just be sure to plant in a low traffic area as the stems are very breakable.  This plant can be used as a groundcover, only reaching 12” tall and  will die back in colder areas but rebounds quickly in the spring after the weather warms.  It will need a well drained rich soil planted in partial shade, but will tolerate full sun in a south or east setting.
